Native ads on Taboola, Microsoft, Outbrain, Revcontent, MGID and Yahoo

Native ads sit inside the pages people are already reading, so they win on curiosity, not on shouting. The six big US networks sell similar placements with different rules. Here is how they compare, what is winning on each, and the specs and rules that matter.

Where this week’s top native ads ran

Of the 1,824 most-bought US native ads we read in the week of November 2, 2026, this is how many ran on each network. It shows where the money is concentrated in public native ad libraries, not each network’s total size.

Taboola76%
Microsoft0%
Outbrain2%
Revcontent2%
MGID19%
Yahoo0%
Advertisers: Taboola 337, Microsoft 0, Outbrain 20, Revcontent 11, MGID 12, Yahoo 1. The rest ran on other exchanges.

That concentration is why our network pages break Taboola out on its own and use every network’s data for the others when a week has too few of their ads to say anything reliable.

The details and how to make one picture work everywhere: native ad image sizes.

What is the same everywhere

The rules differ in detail but agree on the big things. No suggestive pictures, no gore or graphic conditions, no fake buttons or warnings, no celebrities without permission, and no promise the landing page doesn’t keep. Outbrain’s and Revcontent’s written rules are stricter on split before-and-after frames, Yahoo reviews every before-and-after, Outbrain and Yahoo reject arrows and circles, and Microsoft allows no text on the picture. Let the winners set the bar: what they already run is fair game in the same form, never more extreme. See every rule and its fix.

The other thing that is the same everywhere: ads wear out. In our research, half of the week’s most-bought native ads had been running 21 days or less, so a steady supply of new pictures matters more than any single ad. How long native ads run.

Questions

What is a native ad network?

A company that places ads inside publishers’ pages so they look like part of the site: usually a row of pictures and headlines under an article, labelled as sponsored. Taboola, Microsoft, Outbrain, Revcontent, MGID and Yahoo are the biggest in the US. Advertisers pay per click and buy through each network’s self-serve platform.

Which native network should I start with?

Most advertisers start where most of the spend is. In our weekly research most of the most-bought native ads run on Taboola, so it is the usual first test. Outbrain has the strictest picture rules, so a picture that passes there will usually pass everywhere. Microsoft, Revcontent, MGID and Yahoo are worth testing once you have a winner.

Can one ad run on every native network?

Yes, if it passes the strictest rules. One clean photograph with no text and nothing more extreme than the winners already run, cropped to each network’s shapes (16:9, 1.91:1, 1:1 and 3:2) with the subject in the centre, works on all six. That is how we make every picture.

Do native ads work for small businesses?

They can, especially for offers that need a little explaining, like health products, home services, insurance and Medicare. Native readers are browsing, not searching, so the picture has to stop them. That is why we build every ad on a winning formula from your space.
