Taboola ad specs, explained

Everything Taboola asks of an ad’s picture, title and branding text, from Taboola’s own help center (checked October 2026), plus how to make one picture survive every crop Taboola applies.

Taboola specs in one table

Image ratio16:9 preferred. 4:3 and 1:1 are accepted, and Taboola crops automatically unless you set the crop yourself.
Image size1200 x 674 px recommended in Realize’s help center (some newer Taboola articles say 1067 x 600). Minimum 400 x 350 px, and smaller images serve in fewer placements.
FileUp to 5 MB. JPEG preferred; PNG and GIF are accepted.
Title60 characters or fewer, because publishers’ widgets cut longer titles. Taboola’s own guide calls 34 to 45 characters the sweet spot.
Branding textUp to 30 characters (the advertiser name shown under the title).
Text on the imageKeep it off. Taboola’s rules reject fake buttons and misleading overlays, and text is unreadable at widget size anyway.

The image

Taboola shows the same ad in many widget shapes across thousands of publisher sites, and crops your picture to fit each one. Upload a 16:9 landscape image at 1200 x 674 px and assume Taboola will also show it closer to 4:3 or square.

  • Keep the subject in the centre square. A face or product near the edge is the first thing a crop cuts off. If the picture still makes sense cropped to a square from the middle, it is safe.
  • One subject, big. Thumbnails are small on a phone. A person’s face or a product filling a third of the frame reads; a wide scene with small details doesn’t.
  • No words, logos, borders or buttons. They shrink to noise, and fake buttons or warnings break Taboola’s rules.
  • Natural photographs win. In our weekly research, most of the winning formulas advertisers keep paying for use real-looking photographs of people, products and moments; simple diagrams are the main exception. See native ad images that win.
  • File size and format. JPEG up to 5 MB. Larger files don’t look better in a widget and can be compressed by Taboola anyway.

The title

Taboola recommends 60 characters or fewer, because each publisher’s widget has its own width and longer titles get cut. Its guide calls 34 to 45 characters the sweet spot.

In practice, many advertisers run longer. Of the 1,824 most-bought native ads we read this week, the typical headline was 61 characters, and 50% were longer than 60.

Long titles are not a reason to write long. A title cut off at the wrong word loses its point. Put the promise in the first 40 characters so it survives any widget, and treat anything after that as a bonus. More on what the top headlines do in native ad headlines.

Branding text, the advertiser name shown with the ad, can be up to 30 characters. Use the name your landing page shows, so the click feels consistent.

Checklist before you upload to Taboola

  1. Size and ratio16:9, 1200 x 674 px, JPEG under 5 MB.
  2. Crop testCrop it to a square from the centre. Is the subject still there?
  3. Nothing drawn on itNo text, logo, border, arrow, play button or warning sign.
  4. RulesNothing more suggestive or graphic than the winners already running, no nudity or gore, no real recognisable people, no official seals. See why native ads get rejected.
  5. Title60 characters or fewer, the promise in the first 40, and the landing page keeps that promise.
  6. VarietyThree to five pictures and two or three titles per campaign, so Taboola has combinations to rotate.

How our images fit Taboola

Every picture we make comes in four sizes from one image: 1200 x 674 (16:9) for Taboola, 1200 x 628 and 1200 x 1200 for Microsoft, and 1200 x 800 for Outbrain, Revcontent and MGID. The subject is kept in the centre so Taboola’s automatic crops to 4:3 and 1:1 still work. Headlines are written to 60 characters or fewer. Each ad is built on a winning formula from your space right now, so it starts from what Taboola readers are already clicking. See what’s winning on Taboola.

Questions

What is the best image size for Taboola?

1200 x 674 px at 16:9, per Realize’s help center (some newer Taboola articles say 1067 x 600, the same ratio). The minimum is 400 x 350 px, and smaller images serve in fewer placements. Files can be up to 5 MB; JPEG is preferred.

Does Taboola accept square images?

Yes. 16:9 is preferred, and 4:3 and 1:1 are accepted. Taboola crops automatically to fit each placement unless you adjust the crop yourself, so keep the subject in the centre whatever shape you upload.

How many characters can a Taboola title have?

Keep it to 60 characters or fewer. Limits vary with each publisher’s widget, so Taboola recommends 60 so titles aren’t cut off, and suggests 34 to 45 as the best length.

What is branding text on Taboola?

The advertiser name shown with the ad, usually under the title. It can be up to 30 characters. Use the name people will recognise on your landing page.

Can I put text on a Taboola thumbnail?

Avoid it. Taboola rejects fake buttons, warnings and misleading overlays, and words are unreadable at widget size. Put the words in the title and let the picture do one job.
