Yahoo ads: what’s winning right now
Yahoo native ads are the sponsored stories in the feeds of Yahoo’s own sites and across other publishers. Advertisers buy them through Yahoo DSP, which replaced the old Yahoo Gemini platform; Yahoo’s own spec pages note that native ads on Yahoo’s sites are now powered by Taboola. Yahoo publishes two sets of specs, one for its own native network and one for native bought programmatically on other sites, so check which one your campaign uses.
What’s winning on Yahoo right now
Only 1 of the week’s 1,824 most-bought native ads ran on Yahoo, from 1 advertiser. That is too few to say what wins on Yahoo alone, so the winning formulas below are from every native network. The rules and specs further down are Yahoo’s own.
Winning formulas across native this week
Each is the psychology and kind of photo several different advertisers keep paying for, with how many use it and how long their ads have run. A winning formula is the idea, not anyone’s ad: make your own version for your product.
Product held in hand for scale
- 12 advertisers
- 19 ads
- 17 days running (median)
- Shopping & gadgets
- The product in a hand
Close-up shots of a small product held between fingers or in the palm to show size, detail and tactile appeal.
Isolated studio product shot
- 11 advertisers
- 18 ads
- 45 days running (median)
- Shopping & gadgets
- Clean product shots
Clean studio or gradient backgrounds that isolate a single product (or set of variants) so shape, color and specs are front-and-center.
Close-up cash or money imagery
- 9 advertisers
- 11 ads
- 46 days running (median)
- Finance & insurance
- Money, checks and benefits
Tight shots of bills, stacks, rolls, gold or money-counting machines that instantly signal payouts, savings or monetary value.
Watch the rules: Avoid anything that looks like an official notice, a government seal or a fake check: networks reject those.
Side-by-side before/after comparisons
- 8 advertisers
- 25 ads
- 59 days running (median)
- Beauty & anti-aging
- Before-and-after comparisons
Shows a direct visual transformation (split, two-panel, or side-by-side) to promise visible results from the product or treatment, letting viewers quickly judge effectiveness.
Watch the rules: These are running on the networks right now, so a before/after in the same form is fair game. Keep it honest and no more extreme than the ones already running.
Carefree moments of the target customer
- 8 advertisers
- 10 ads
- 13 days running (median)
- Seniors & Medicare
- The customer in a good moment
Shows older adults enjoying relaxed, social or joyful scenes to sell the desired 'after' lifestyle and emotional benefit of a product or service.
Watch the rules: Keep people fully dressed in ordinary poses: suggestive shots get rejected.

Yahoo ad specs
From Yahoo’s own help pages, checked October 2026. Networks change these, so check them in your account before a big upload.
| Image (programmatic native) | 1200 x 627 px (1.91:1) large image, JPG or PNG; 1920 x 1080 (16:9) is also accepted. A 627 x 627 (1:1) square is highly recommended, up to 2 MB. |
|---|---|
| Image (Yahoo Native Network) | 1920 x 1080 (16:9) main image and 627 x 627 (1:1) square, both required, up to 5 MB each. JPEG preferred; PNG and non-animated GIF accepted. At least 600 x 400 px to serve in every placement. |
| Headline | Programmatic native: up to 50 characters. Yahoo Native Network: 34 to 45 characters recommended, 100 maximum. |
| Description | Programmatic native: up to 90 characters (some exchanges allow fewer). Yahoo Native Network: 150 or fewer recommended, 250 maximum. |
| Advertiser name | Up to 25 characters for programmatic native; branding text up to 30 on the Yahoo Native Network. |
| Text on the image | Yahoo highly recommends no ad copy or text on the picture, and no more than 20% text or logo. |
What we deliver: We deliver every picture in four sizes from one image: 1200 x 674 for Taboola, 1200 x 628 and 1200 x 1200 for Microsoft, and 1200 x 800 for Outbrain, Revcontent and MGID. For Yahoo, use the 1200 x 628 file for the 1.91:1 image (Yahoo asks for 1200 x 627, the same shape) and the 1200 x 1200 file for the 1:1 square (scale it to 627 x 627 if the upload asks for that exact size). For the Yahoo Native Network’s 16:9 main image, use the 1200 x 674 file. Headlines are written to 60 characters or fewer; for programmatic native’s 50-character limit, use a shorter cut.
Every network side by side: native ad image sizes.
Rules that get Yahoo ads rejected
The picture rules below come from Yahoo’s published policies. Each comes with the fix we use when a winning idea breaks one: keep the idea, change how it’s shown.
Sexually suggestive pictures, or a focus on chest, groin, midriff or buttocks
Instead: Show the whole person, head included, fully dressed, in an ordinary pose. Yahoo asks for models shown in complete form.
Before-and-after pictures without review by Yahoo’s ad policy team
Instead: Expect a review. If winners on Yahoo run one, the same form is fair game, never more extreme. If none do, show one honest after-state.
Arrows, circles and loud, clashing colours used only to grab attention
Instead: Let the composition point at the subject: framing and focus, not drawn marks.
Scare tactics and gore
Instead: Show the moment the problem bothers someone, not the fear or the injury.
Pictures that imitate editorial content, emails or Yahoo’s own features, or fake buttons and controls
Instead: A plain photograph with nothing drawn on it.
Celebrities or politicians without permission, and undisclosed deepfakes
Instead: Use invented people or your own team, and never imply a real person endorses you.
Every network’s rules in one place: why native ads get rejected.
How to launch and test on Yahoo
- Check which Yahoo specs your campaign uses: programmatic native (1200 x 627 and 627 x 627) or the Yahoo Native Network (1920 x 1080 and 627 x 627).
- Upload a landscape picture and a square one, three to five pictures in all, with two or three headlines, in one country.
- Keep headlines to 50 characters so one set works in both, and keep text off the pictures.
- Keep the leaders, cut the losers, and add one new picture per round built on a winning formula from your space.
The step that matters most is the last one: a steady supply of new pictures built on what is already working. That is the part ConvertBetterAds does for you. See how to test native ads for the full method.

What image size do Yahoo native ads need?
For native bought through Yahoo DSP on other sites, Yahoo’s specs ask for a 1200 x 627 px (1.91:1) image, with a 627 x 627 square highly recommended. On the Yahoo Native Network the main image is 1920 x 1080 (16:9) plus a 627 x 627 square, up to 5 MB each.
How long can a Yahoo native headline be?
Up to 50 characters for programmatic native, with descriptions up to 90. On the Yahoo Native Network, Yahoo recommends 34 to 45 characters, with 100 the maximum. Writing to 50 keeps one headline usable in both.
What happened to Yahoo Gemini?
Yahoo Gemini, Yahoo’s old self-serve native and search platform, was folded into Yahoo’s demand-side platform, now Yahoo DSP. Yahoo’s spec pages say native ads on Yahoo’s own sites are now powered by Taboola.
Are before-and-after pictures allowed on Yahoo?
Not without review by Yahoo’s ad policy team. If winners on Yahoo run one in a given form, that form is passing review: match it, never more extreme.
How much of the native ads you track run on Yahoo?
In the week of November 2, 2026, 1 of the 1,824 most-bought native ads we read ran on Yahoo (0%), from 1 advertisers. That share reflects what public native ad libraries see, not Yahoo’s size.
